International Contract Awards

Digital Communications for EF-18A/B

The Spanish air force is moving forward with plans to make its EF-18A/B aircraft among the most network-enabled platforms in NATO. EADS-CASA has selected Innovative Concepts, McLean, Virginia, and General Dynamics UK Limited, South Wales, United Kingdom, to supply an integrated, low-risk, improved data modem (IDM) solution. Innovative Concepts IDM suite of technology will give the EF-18s tactical air to ground digital communications for critical close air support missions.

Buyout Agreement Set
Finmeccanica, Rome, has signed a definitive agreement with GKN plc, Redditch, United Kingdom, to acquire GKN’s 50 percent stake in Agusta Westland N.V. for 1.5 million euros ($1.8 million). Agusta Westland is one of the world’s largest helicopter suppliers and was established as a joint venture in 2001 through the combination of GKN’s and Finmeccanica’s respective helicopter businesses.
 
Psychological Operations
The U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, has hired a Canadian company, Mist Mobility Integrated Systems Technology Incorporated (MMIST), to provide equipment for dropping leaflets. The $75 million contract covers new equipment, spares, training and contractor logistics support for the company’s wind supported air delivery system. MMIST is located in Ontario, Canada.

Sonobuoys Contract
The U.K. Ministry of Defence has entered into a long-term contract for the supply and support of sonobuoys for the Nimrod MR2, Merlin and Nimrod MRA4 aircraft. Sonobuoys are the key sensors used in anti-submarine warfare. Estimated to be worth £60 million ($107.8 million) over 10 years, the sole-source contract includes upgrades, manufacture, supply and logistic support. Ultra Electronics, Greenford, United Kingdom, will perform the work.

Apache Aircrew Situational Awareness
Greek Apache helicopters will be receiving defensive systems to detect, identify, prioritize and counter threats without the need for crew intervention. Known as HIDAS, for Helicopter Integrated Defensive Aids System, the technology can be used in automatic, semiautomatic or manual mode and will increase Apache aircrew situational awareness, reduce time to react to threats and increase efficiency and effectiveness of countermeasures. BAE Systems Avionics Group, Basildon, United Kingdom, will supply the equipment through a U.S. foreign military sale contract administered by the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
