A Tribute to Buck Bragunier

Buck Bragunier

Buck Bragunier, a well-known, hard working and dedicated member of AFCEA, the San Diego business and military community, and numerous other organizations, died at his home on May 5, 2004.

For many years, Buck  Bragunier delivered profound benefits to San Diego's active and veteran war fighters, through his energetic leadership of Fleet Week, AFCEA and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.

"Buck was a true patriot who tirelessly worked to improve his community in San Diego and to increase international security by  using his leadership as an AFCEAN. We depended on Buck for wise council and teamwork, and he never let us down," relates Vice Adm. Herbert A. Browne, USN (Ret.), president and chief executive officer of AFCEA International.

In recent years, Buck served as AFCEA Regional Vice President, AFCEA San Diego President, Joint C4ISR Symposium Chair, Fleet Week Events Chair, MAAC Executive Committee member, and AFCEA Board member.  He also was deservedly recognized as AFCEAN of the Year in 2002 and AFCEA Veteran of the Year in 2003.

Buck helped make Fleet Week San Diego the largest military salute in the nation, and he was named to the Fleet Week Hall of Fame for his many years of service at a ceremony during last year's Star Spangled Salute Gala Celebration.

The last of many, many honors for Buck was a plaque presented a week before his death at the opening of The Joint C4ISR Symposium. The inscription reads, "Buck is a man whose integrity, tenacity and fortitude are above reproach.  The heart and soul he has shown in serving his fellow AFCEANs at the highest level, while battling a debilitating disease, present a superb role model for all who know him."

The San Diego Chapter of AFCEA made a tribute to Buck, stating that "a giant star left the San Diego skies with the passing of Buck Bragunier." The chapter will be awarding a scholarship in his honor, and AFCEA International has made a donation to the chapter in support of this effort.

A complete obituary appears in the July issue of SIGNAL Magazine.
