President's message
International Reading Association, my employer, promotes literacy worldwide and values continuing education for its employees. As the Association’s HR Manager, I was privileged to attend the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition held in Washington DC on June 25-28, 2006. Once again, I was amazed at the vast wealth of information available for attendees. If you have never had the opportunity to attend a SHRM national conference, mark your calendar for June 24-27, 2007, and plan to go to Las Vegas, NV.

More than 12,000 people attended the conference, and more than 4,000 of the attendees were certified HR professionals. If you have not yet earned the Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), or Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) designation, I urge you to make it one of your professional goals. For information about the designations visit the Human Resource Certification Institute website at www.hrci.org.

Scott Cawood, a Delaware SHRM Past President and current President of Modern Think, LLC., in New York, presented a Mega Session on “The Business of People—The Power of the Workplace.” We look forward to Scott being one of the featured speakers at our Annual Delaware State HR Conference in November 2006.

SHRM leaders recognized the conference attendees as being both courageous and cool. HR professionals have to be courageous to help employees deal with bomb threats, floods, tornadoes, chemical spills, abuse issues, etc. BUT our jobs are “cool” according to MONEY MAGAZINE, because we get to “make work more rewarding for workers…and help shape corporate culture and strategy.” WOW!!

It is cool to be an HR professional. Being a member and President of Delaware SHRM makes it even cooler for me. It is wonderful to have a group of local professionals to meet with on a monthly basis. We network and learn together. Not everyone can attend SHRM’s annual conference, but taking one evening a month to attend a Delaware SHRM chapter meeting is doable for most HR professionals.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming chapter events.
