The ability to tailor a patient’s treatment to their own unique genetic makeup is the objective in many disease types. Nowhere is it more evident than in the current treatment of cancer. In 2008, American Cancer Society projects that 1.4 million cancer cases will be diagnosed. Over 600,000 cancer patients will be given chemotherapy but studies show that 70% of cancer patients do not respond to their chemotherapy treatment. Every year, more than $8 billion dollars are spent on costs related to ineffective chemotherapy. These unnecessary costs could have been avoided if therapy selection diagnostics were used before initiating a treatment regimen.
