As a CI professional, you are always looking for ways to identify new sources, learn new techniques, and improve your analytical skills. Many of you have found value by reading (and writing) short articles for scip.online. Yet a constant theme in member emails has been the need for more short tips and techniques.

Please consider sharing you knowledge by writing a one to three paragraph description of a specific process or resource which has helped you through your day. As Scott Swanson points out in his article, the feedback you get from your peers is well worth your time.

The sessions at this one day conference will focus on interdisciplinary research and effective teaching of CI. Registration is $299.

Hairstyling 101 for CI practitioners: defining intelligence needs.
by Scott Swanson

Why won't CI clients take the proper time to define requirements up front, instead of taking more time later revamping findings and resetting expectations? Is there an easy way of convincing a senior manager that more details are needed despite the fact that it may require more due diligence on their part before making the request? Scott Swanson suggests a rebuttal that has helped him convince a client to provide more upfront details to create a more successful outcome.

by Jen Griffith

Are you currently unemployed? Are you seeking new employees? Are you a student looking for an internship? Or, do you work for a company that could benefit from having a student intern? If you answered yes to any of these questions, make sure to stop by the SCIP registration foyer during the Annual International Conference & Exhibit in Anaheim from March 12-15, 2003. SCIP will provide a bulletin board dedicated to jobs, job seekers, and internship opportunities. Please provide your own copies for postings.

In addition, students graduating this year are strongly encouraged to provide copies of their resumes. If you are unable to attend the Conference, but would like to post something on the bulletin board, please send your request to Jen Griffith. Also, see an abbreviated list of current job postings in the full story section.

The idea machine: CI practice and patents.
by Lynn Tellefsen

Patents can be one of the richest sources of technical information. An organization's CI practice can examine patents to identify and understand competitive portfolios, analyze trends, and assess product speed-to-market histories. In-house access to patent information and the ability to annotate records can increase a company's ability to be competitive.
