Melanie Wing. VP Programs and Education, SCIP Board of Directors, melaniewing@firstUSA.com Michael Reed, SCIP Director of Learning, mreed@scip.org

Summary: After taking a fresh look at our member's professional development needs, SCIP is creating a core curriculum for SCIP University, which will use a portal as the basis for all of SCIP's future educational programs. We are also establishing formal Communities of Practice, starting with competitive technical intelligence, sales and marketing intelligence, and strategic intelligence. Additionally, SCIP is creating a member’s only online learning environment that includes e-learning modules, webinars, hot topic discussions, mini training sessions and a collection of best practices and highlights from previous educational programs.

The SCIP staff and Board of Directors are taking a fresh look at our members’ professional development needs and how SCIP can best advocate the ethical use of intelligence in business decision making. We are committed to understanding your training needs and responding with educational opportunities that enhance your career and increase your value to your organization. This new SCIP educational vision centers on the SCIP University concept. A SCIP University portal will be the basis for all SCIP future educational programs and will incorporate the greatest of SCIP’s assets -- its members.
At the heart of SCIP University is developing a core curriculum. By leveraging our knowledge and understanding of competitive intelligence (CI) practitioners’ educational needs, we are creating educational experiences that develop and expand CI professional competencies. Our initial efforts are focused on providing programs for individuals new to competitive intelligence. We will rapidly include advanced analytical tools, process management, ethics and other areas of interest. Developing communities of practice allows for peer-to-peer interaction and educational exchanges, builds best practices across CI communities, and creates a collaborative problem solving environment. These communities of practice are initially focusing on specific types of intelligence, and will grow as members identify and develop common interests. Competitive Technical Intelligence, Sales and Marketing Intelligence, and Strategic Intelligence are the first communities being created. SCIP continues to offer the Annual International Conference and Exhibit as well as the European Conference and symposia like the Sales and Marketing Intelligence Symposium (October 3-4 2002 in San Francisco). This year’s educational offerings are shaping up to be some of the best ever, placing emphasis on teaching participants to be more effective in their analysis and management, and demonstrating a clear return on investment.
Additionally, SCIP is creating a members-only online learning environment that provides e-learning modules, webinars, hot topic discussions, mini training sessions and a collection of best practices and highlights from previous educational programs. We are very excited about the direction of the SCIP professional development and educational programs. While we anticipate a late Fall kickoff to the portal, developing SCIP University is an ongoing process. As the needs of our members grow more and more sophisticated, SCIP University will respond by providing quality learning experiences for all levels of CI practitioners.
As we institute these programs over the course of the coming year, SCIP members will see an expansion of programs that enhance their SCIP membership and broaden SCIP’s organizational capabilities.
Members of the SCIP community may help sponsor the development of the SCIP University portal. Details about sponsoring a community of practice or e-learning educational program can be obtained from Michael Reed at the SCIP office.
