Summary: Fletcher/CSI developed the Competitive Intelligence Writing Awards as an incentive to encourage both people who are new to CI and have fresh ideas, and seasoned practitioners to share their knowledge base with the community as a whole. Mark Johnson, winner of last year's award, reflects on his experience and the professional and personal awards of participation.

Over the years Steve Levy and Erik Glitman, principals of Fletcher/CSI and creators of the Fletcher/CSI Foundation, have heard many comments at meetings and throughout the CI community that it’s always the same people in the industry who are heard from in publications or seminars.

They started looking for a way to encourage those within the CI community who had knowledge that would add to the industry but had no way to share it or who didn’t feel confident that there was interest in what they had to say.

“We formed the foundation,” Steve said, “because we were searching for a way that would allow us to give back to the community in which we’ve been involved for more than 15 years. The CI community has been very good to us, as has our involvement with SCIP. We wanted some way to pay back this dedicated group and to foster professional excellence at the same time.”

Steve and Erik developed the Competitive Intelligence Writing Awards as an incentive to bring out the creativity of people who wouldn’t ordinarily write for publication. A contest might encourage both people who are new to CI and have fresh ideas or might persuade practitioners who have years of experience to share their knowledge base with the community as a whole.

As mentioned in SCIP.online issue 13, the Fletcher/CSI Foundation’s 2nd Annual Award Competition for Competitive Intelligence Writing has extended its deadline until October 30th. First place is $1,500,  second place is $500, and third place is $100. The Competition is open to all who are active in a professional capacity at an academic institution, business, consulting, or professional association. The article submitted for consideration must be original and not have been previously submitted for publication anywhere else. Collaborative work will be accepted as long as all entrants meet the participation guidelines. For entry guidelines and details go to www.fletchercsi.com.

Mark B. Johnson, Sr. of Dallas, Texas won first place in the 2001 Fletcher/CSI Foundation Award Competition for Competitive Intelligence Writing with his paper, “Competitive Profiling with Financial Ratio Analysis.”  He explained how he came to enter the Competition: “I had given a presentation on a similar topic that had been well received. The editor of CI Magazine even expressed interest in publishing it….if I wrote it up. Last summer, after I was downsized from Southwestern Bell, I finally had time to write. I felt this was a hot topic and was gratified that others thought so, too. Much more than the cash award, I really appreciated the recognition from my peers that this was a good idea and that I’d written it up well. The professional feedback was wonderful. I think what the Fletcher/CSI Foundation is doing to advance the field is outstanding. It’s what other organizations should be doing to foster more growth in the field.”

In the 2001 Award Competition Sharada Alampalli was awarded second place for her article, “Role of CI for Opportunity Assessment at PTI” and Annette Rich receive in third place for her article on “Sales Intelligence.” Both articles are being published in Competitive Intelligence Magazine.

Other planned Foundation activities include scholarships to professional seminars and workshops, and an academic advisory board to promote and encourage the study of CI as it is being developed in college level curricula.
