SCIP's mentoring program. Toni Wilson, SCIP Board of Directors, SCIPMentoring@aol.com ********** Summary: SCIP’s mentoring program officially started at the Cincinnati conference with 20 mentor/mentee pairings. This collaborative learning process provides value to the individuals on both side of the equation. Toni Wilson reviews the advantages of program participation and invites more mentors to take advantage of this service. ********** “Mentoring is a reciprocal learning relationship between two (or more) individuals who work collaboratively toward a mutually defined goal of developing the mentee’s skills, abilities, knowledge and thinking.” [Lois Zachary, The Mentor’s Guide.] SCIP’s mentoring program began with a roar during the official kick-off at the SCIP Annual Conference in Cincinnati in April. As of June 1, there were more than 30 mentor/mentee partnerships in place and going strong, with several additional ones in the queue. When members participate in SCIP’s mentoring program, they engage in a powerful process that increases the value of their membership. The mentoring program:
- Develops the next generation of CI professionals by putting into action the accumulated experience of the discipline’s thought leaders.
- Facilitates one-on-one interaction among SCIP members of all types, in all industries, with all levels of experience, interaction that can lead to long-term, meaningful relationships.
- Increases the success of corporate CI practitioners and independent consultants by educating them in a non-classroom learning environment.
- Allows experienced CI professionals to develop their coaching and leadership skills.
“Mentors are people whose enthusiasm for their work is so contagious that they inspire others just by doing what they enjoy most.” [Zachary]
Several mentees are still waiting to be matched with mentors. Are you qualified to be a SCIP mentor?
- Are you a CI professional with five years or more of professional experience?
- Can you volunteer enough time to interact with a mentee on a regular basis?
- Are you patient, a good listener, confident of your own abilities and achievements, and willing to share your experiences?
- Are you willing and able to provide feedback and demonstrate ethical leadership to a mentee?
- Do you wish to “give back” to the CI profession and reflect well on someone who once mentored you?
While the advantages of the program for the mentees are fairly evident, there are some unexpected benefits that have been realized by two of our participating mentors:
“My relationship with Martha has given me a jolt of new energy for my profession. Being around someone with so much interest in her career and in bettering her skills has perked me up.” Melanie Prudom, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
“I suspect that at the end of our mentoring relationship we will be CI colleagues, brought about via the mentoring program.” Dale Fehringer, VISA Please consider becoming a SCIP mentor—the CI community needs you.
