Blue Ribbon Commission Moving Forward with Recommendations

First 5 Sacramento has been heavily involved in the Blue Ribbon Commission work, particularly since a significant portion of the deaths occur in children under five years old. A critical and immediate need in Sacramento County is reducing the disproportionate number of deaths among African American children.

Program Spotlight: New Preschool in the Delta

The preschool program will serve 40 children; 24 at Walnut Grove Elementary and 16 at Isleton Elementary; Isleton already has14 slots filled. Thanks to First 5 Sacramento funding, RDUSD will be opening a preschool program in the Fall of 2013 serving children from Walnut Grove and those living in Isleton as well!

What’s In the President’s Universal Preschool Plan?

Investments in early childhood education and development on the mandatory side of the budget would be fully financed by raising the federal tax on cigarettes. President Obama sent a clear signal about the importance of early childhood education when he announced a proposal during his State of the Union Address speech to make universal preschool available to all children nationwide.

Program Spotlight: Community Resource Project WIC (CRP WIC) Increases Awareness About Breastfeeding and Breast Milk Donation

One of the donors, Laura Byrd, received breastfeeding assistance and support from CRP WIC earlier this year. Staff prides themselves on supporting mothers and educating them about the many crucial benefits of breastfeeding.

Text4baby Provides Important Service for Pregnant Women and New Mothers

Text4baby is a nationwide program that sends three free text messages per week to pregnant women and mothers of babies up to age 1. With more than 500,000 subscribers, the public-private partnership is made possible through the support of about 900 nationwide partners, including First 5 Sacramento.

Study Debunks Concerns Over Childhood Vaccinations

It is estimated that about 90 percent of American children receive all the recommended childhood vaccinations by the time they enter kindergarten. The Institute of Medicine, which performed the study for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found no evidence that the childhood immunization schedule is unsafe.
