The all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 crossover will put a smile on your face and the practical side of your brain at ease. It’s the compact crossover only Mazda could build, and to go with its superior handling and driving dynamics, it comes with the best highway fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America (hybrids included), as well as best-in-class overall fuel economy. MotorWeek has already awarded the new CX-5 its 2012 Driver’s Choice Award for “Best Small Utility Vehicle,” and Autobytel.com has selected it as 2012 “Crossover of the Year.”
At first glance, the midsize five-passenger 2013 CX-5 (MSRP $20,695) is instantly recognizable as a Mazda. The angular, aggressive headlights, five-point grille, and athletic body embody the Mazda “Zoom-Zoom” spirit. The Sport model features 17-inch alloy wheels, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, and halogen headlights that give it a standout appearance.
Other models include the Touring and Grand Touring. The former adds foglamps, while the latter offers 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, automatic on/off headlights, a moonroof and heated side mirrors.
Comfortable, accommodating cabin
Mazda opted for a refreshingly straightforward approach to the CX-5 cabin. The simple three-knob HVAC setup is cleanly separated from the audio controls. Features such as bucket seats, a 60/40-split/fold rear bench seat, and a USB port are standard across the lineup. The range-topping Grand Touring includes three-level heated leather sport bucket seats, 40/20/40 one-touch split-fold second row, a 5.8-inch information and entertainment monitor, and Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming audio. The Grand Touring is also equipped with a Bose nine-speaker stereo with auxiliary input jack, and Bose AudioPilot. The AudioPilot system utilizes an in-cabin microphone to detect and cancel-out ambient noises for optimal sound quality.
The Grand Touring Technology Package includes navigation, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights with Adaptive Front Lighting System, the Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry system and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
In the CX-5 the all-new SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine features Variable Valve Timing (VVT). Basically, SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY is a holistic engineering philosophy applied to every component of the vehicle. The result is vehicle systems that work in complete harmony with each other to provide both more power and increased efficiency. To that end, the engine makes 155 hp and delivers an EPA-estimated 35 mpg.
The Sport is standard with a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission – the only one available in the segment. The Sport is also available with a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic with manual shift mode that is standard across the rest of the line. Drivers who choose the six-speed automatic can also select the Mazda Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive system for enhanced handling and traction in any conditions.
Like its Mazda brethren, the CX-5 shows its true colors diving into corners, rather than cruising a straight line. An all-new SKYACTIV Body and SKYACTIV Chassis work together for outstanding driving performance. The new body is both lighter and 30 percent stiffer, and the new chassis offers more stability and increased agility. The independent MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar are well sorted, meeting the standard of the same automaker that produces the iconic MX-5 Miata.
Performance, meet peace of mind
Exemplary safety is a requisite in this segment. In addition to the advanced front and side-impact airbags, the CX-5 boasts Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Traction Control System (TCS), a fold-away brake pedal assembly, front and rear crumple zones and side-impact door beams, all as standard equipment. A Blind Spot Monitoring System and rearview backup camera are standard on Touring and Grand Touring models. The available rear parking sensors are a welcomed option for parking in the city.
Make Your Statement
The CX-5 is a battle cry for those who require the versatility and capability of a crossover, but who are not content to relinquish the elevated heart-rate produced from delving into a corner with haste. Test-drive the 2013 Mazda CX-5 for yourself, and you’ll see what all the excitement is about.
