Combining 3D CADD with Laser Scanning
A Quantapoint Whitepaper
The broad adoption of three-dimensional Computer Aided Design and Drafting (3D CADD) tools has resulted in dramatic improvements in design engineering productivity and quality. The advantages offered by modern 3D CADD tools are numerous and well documented. For example, 3D visual model representations are intuitive for user audiences ranging from novice to expert, which can help ease coordination with project stakeholders that may lack familiarity with traditional engineering design drawings, such as steel details, piping plan drawings, and piping isometrics. Additionally, 3D CADD tools typically support integrated, multidisciplinary design work processes, helping to ensure quality and consistency...

Shell Oil Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Project - A Case Study
Shell Oil Company modified several of its US refineries to comply with Low Sulfur Diesel requirements. This involved significant modifications to several operating units at five refineries located in Washington, Texas and Louisiana. The goal was to select a work process that provided a highly accurate and detailed 3D model in a fraction of the time required by traditional surveying techniques. It was further required that 3D laser scanning would generate a model that would not require a costly and time-consuming re-modeling effort.
Quantapoint performed laser scanning at five refineries, eight operating units total. The scope of work included Hydrotreater Units, Gas Oil Hydrotreater Units, Diesel Hydrotreater Units, Piperacks, and OSBL Tie Points. Over 1,000 laser scanned images and completed documentation of the facility were completed in a fraction of the time required by traditional surveying methods. 3D models were issued within one week after completion of fieldwork, enabled detailed engineering design to be executed in India.

Beta Test Starts for PRISM 3D and QuantaCAD for PDMS
Quantapoint has started beta testing for new versions of PRISM 3D™ and QuantaCAD™ for PDMS. PRISM 3D remains the most advanced and usable technology for plants digitized using laser scanning and QuantaCAD enables 3D laser models to be accessed within AVEVA PDMS. A few of the new capabilities include:
- A panoramic view for 2D laser images, which removes visual distortions.
- Load a 3D laser model by picking a point in a 2D laser image.
- A "one-click" 3D pipe estimator.
- Set maximum and minimum clipping planes or sections by clicking on the 3D laser model.
- Add tag points / D-Points to 3D laser models.
- Load all models intersecting the bounding region of a CAD element.
