Fluor Beats Budget and Timeline With Improved On Site Safety
Laser Scanning Used To Capture As-Built Data in Harsh Environment
Situation Fluor was selected to implement a nitrogen oxide and highly reactive volatile organic compound reduction program for a major Texas refinery. The project involved modifying tightly spaced process heaters and carbon monoxide boilers to comply with Texas regulations, requiring replacment of older burners with ultra low NOx burners and adding new fuel gas piping.
Challenge The project faced two major challenges. First, the space under each furnace and boiler was extremely congested and difficult to access. Second, there was a lack of accurate and current as-built documentation for the design.
Solution Fluor selected Quantapoint to perform as-built laser documentation because of their significant refining experience and ability to capture high-resolution dimensional data in difficult and congested areas.
Results Using Quantapoint, Fluor managed completion with virtually zero field rework, optimized scheduling from fewer engineering man-hours, and reduced outage time during construction, thus allowing construction work on each furnace to be completed 3 days ahead of schedule. Additional advantages also included accuracy of fit-up, improved design review capabilities, less physical survey time and improved safety exposure by the engineering team – all of which contributed to a lower project cost.
