Qualmark - Accelerating Product Reliability

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Qualmark eBrief   VOLUME 9 ISSUE 3
Webinar - Medical Device Risk Management
Are You Ready for IEC 60601?

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) 60601 becomes applicable in the USA as a standard in July 2013 as mandated by FDA and OSHA regulations (ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1:2005). The standard increases the requirements and control measures for medical device safety, performance, and risk management.
Risk Management expert, John Hansen of Tushar Mountain Technical Associates (TMTA), reviews the business impact of IEC 60601 and the role accelerated reliability testing plays in meeting the requirements throughout a product’s life cycle.   Hansen will present how he has applied HALT/HASS effectively on medical devices during the design and verification processes, and post market activities and discuss how accelerated reliability testing can be used to virtually eliminate infantile defects.

College Park, MD: Qualmark to present “One Attribute That Can’t be Counterfeited”

Tom Peters, director of Qualmark’s Center of Excellence, will be a featured speaker at the upcoming SMTA/CALCE Symposium on Counterfeit Electronic Parts and Electronic Supply Chain, June 25-27 at the Marriott Inn & Conference Center University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Numerous methods such as source verification, visual and microscopy inspection, and material analysis may help stem infiltration, but trapping sophisticated electronics counterfeits, such as active semiconductor devices, batteries, circuit boards, electromechanical components before they leave the production facility can be very difficult. Peters’ presentation shows how HALT and HASS are so effective at detecting counterfeits that can be missed by other detection efforts. Send us an email if you would like to arrange a meeting with Peters at the symposium.

Update: Qualmark Support of University of Arizona Reliability Studies

We are very pleased to learn that the UofA’s Master of Science in Industrial Engineering now includes a Quality & Reliability Engineering option. Qualmark’s Typhoon 2.0 is integral to the to the department’s RISE (Reliability & Intelligent Systems Engineering) laboratory. At the recent Engineering Design Day, two teams of undergraduate students used the Qualmark system as a part of a project competition for the event, with one team winning Best Engineering Analysis Award, sponsored by Caterpillar Inc. and Raytheon Missile Systems.

China: HALT/HASS Seminar Held at Xian Semipower

Qualmark lab partner, Semipower Power Device Testing & Application Center recently hosted a full day seminar on Hi-rel Device/System Testing and Application featuring a presentation by Walter Wu, Qualmark’s Asian-based HALT/HASS Applications Specialist. The well attended event included governmental dignitaries, including, Mr.He Xiaoning, Director, Xi’an IC Industry Development Center、Mr. Jia Qiang, Head of XDRC and Commercial Department, Hi-Tech Zone Xi’an、Mr. Gao Jiping, Deputy director, Xi’an Science and Technology Bureau、Mr.Zhang Weiguo, Director of Xi'an Technology & Science Market. Semipower’s lab consists of 4 distinct centers: application testing, device testing, the reliability lab, and failure analysis. Their Typhoon 2.5 provides the lab with reliability test capabilities unique to the region.

Qualmark Tech Tip

Typhoon and OVS Manager users will want to be sure to back up a Default ini file for the PID’s on a network or other computer by exporting and copying the setup file. It’s also a good idea to do the same with all of your profiles. Should anything happen to the control computer or software, you now have a way to restore these values and have your system running and controlling again in a short time frame.
