Necessity is the Mother of Invention
Necessity is the Mother of Invention
In an industry wrought with financial pressures to fill seats and lower costs, the trend in recent years has been for airlines to outsource maintenance support to low cost providers of well-executed dollar-per-flight-hour service programs. With engine maintenance cost typically representing about two percent of an airline’s total operating cost, outsourced fleet management services are gaining momentum as a means to lower operating costs with little or no capital investment. Pratt & Whitney’s Service Programs Group offers a number of agreements tailored to the customer’s needs.

One such agreement, Fleet Management Programs (FMPs), offers on- and off-wing engine maintenance services under long-term contracts that guarantee maintenance costs charged on an engine-flight-hour, or cycle, basis. FMPs shift the risk burden from the customer to Pratt & Whitney. The OEM / airline partnership is based on common objectives such as improved engine reliability and longer time on-wing, making the optimal maintenance program the heart of the FMP. To assure a win-win for the both the customer and for Pratt & Whitney, total maintenance costs must be minimized. The need for maintenance cost reduction drives the requirement to automate processes and enhance decision support with leading edge engine and fleet management tools through an appropriate delivery mechanism.

Pratt & Whitney’s Advanced Diagnostics and Engine Management (ADEM™) Program was born out of this need. The ADEM team was formally organized in early 2001 in response to Service Programs’ growing responsibility for execution of large commercial FMPs, Material Management Programs (MMPs), and Engine Management Programs (EMPs). Since then, Pratt & Whitney has successfully leveraged some of the same aftermarket services to our military customers, further compelling the need for automation and efficiency.

ADEM is an integrated suite of Web-based tools used by Pratt & Whitney and our customers to manage our commercial and military service programs. This toolset enables internal and external fleet managers and power plant engineers to make the “best maintenance decisions” and helps to prevent IFSDs, UERs, D&Cs, extends time-on-wing and averts minor engine anomalies from developing into operational issues for the customer. If necessity is the mother of invention then ADEM, the brainchild, is maturing to a world-class leader of prevention. To date, ADEM tools have been used to detect V2500 C6 abradable disbond events on more than a dozen engines in our support of a major U.S. airline fleet, preventing severe secondary damage and high costs that Pratt & Whitney would have to bear.

The success of well-executed service programs is attributable to the technical competence of the commercial and military fleet managers coupled with the ADEM toolbox. The Engine Diagnostics tools allow for on-wing performance monitoring -- automatically detecting and interpreting alerts and trend shifts, focusing analysts on high priority issues and optimizing time on wing through performance watch-lists. Engine Management tools are invaluable for on-wing configuration management and removal and shop visit planning. These tools include fleet removal watch lists and optimization, modification standardization, modification incorporation, automated shop maintenance instructions, workscope planning, and shop visit stagger planning. Engine Business Systems tools allow for the collection and analysis of metrics and costs associated with engine utilization and events.

Now that you know who we are, watch us unfold our ADEM products in subsequent articles featuring functionality of deployed tools, more documented success stories from our customers, and what’s on the horizon. We’re proud to be doing our part to power change at Pratt & Whitney.
