WHO Publishes First Indoor Air Quality Guidelines on Dampness and Mould

Today, WHO publishes its first guidelines on indoor air quality, addressing dampness and mould. (1) They are the result of a rigorous two-year review of the currently available science by 36 leading experts worldwide, coordinated by the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The authors conclude that occupants of damp or mouldy buildings, both private and public, have up to a 75% greater risk of respiratory symptoms and asthma. The guidelines recommend the prevention or remediation of dampness- and mould-related problems to significantly reduce harm to health.

Prevention | About two years ago, dozens of workers at a large chicken hatchery in Arkansas began experiencing mysterious skin rashes, with painful lumps scattered over their hands, arms, and legs.
"They hurt real bad," says Joyce Long, 48, a 32-year veteran of the hatchery, where until recently, workers handled eggs and chicks with bare hands. "When we went and got cultured, doctors told us we had a superbug."

Many workers in the Guilford County Courthouse in downtown Greensboro label the courthouse a "sick building" and say they have health problems that have resulted from poor air quality, mold and unsanitary ceiling tiles dampened by roof leaks and cracked pipes – and they have many other complaints regarding the condition of the building.
