Oxnard hospital may shut down over mold

St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard may close for 10 days as soon as August 14 to fight an ongoing mold problem, according to a notification sent to the California Department of Health Services.The notice, sent earlier this month, says the hospital is considering tenting its facility to eliminate the mold in a process that would halt all patient services at the Rose Avenue campus.

California backs lowering formaldehyde in wood

California regulators adopted new standards on Thursday to slash the amount of formaldehyde allowed in wood products, a move they say will save hundreds of people from getting cancer every year. Over objections from some businesses, the California Air Resources Board approved new rules they say will reduce the total amount of formaldehyde released into the air in the state to 150 tons annually, down from the current 650 tons.

What are molds? Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.
