Federal Courthouse Has a Happy Ending to a Moldy Situation

This four-story landmark federal building was abruptly closed as result of mold growing in and outside of the building's walls. The mold was spawned from water leaking into the building spurred on by Florida hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Forensic investigations revealed water that had seeped in around the windows. The resultant mold and bacteria growth was visibly noticeable as well as creating a musty "unhealthy" odor offensive to all.

Our unseasonable weather has brought unusual problems. Mold spores that are normally snow covered are giving allergy sufferers a tough time. The weather and a malfunctioning pump in a Wayne County appartment building combined to create a mold problem so bad that a dozen people were forced out of their homes. Not only were all the tenants evacuated from the Wolcott apartment building, but they also got sick.

Bird deaths shut down downtown Austin

Police shut down 10 blocks of businesses in the heart of downtown early Monday after dozens of birds were found dead in the streets, but officials said preliminary tests showed no dangerous chemicals in the air.  As many as 60 dead pigeons, sparrows and grackles were found overnight along Congress Avenue, a main route through downtown. No human injuries or illnesses were reported.

The Forrest County Circuit Courthouse is getting stripped down.  The mold infestation county officials discovered back in April caused complaints of sinus problems and headaches among some court personnel - but bills for cleaning out the nearly 100-year-old building could cause headaches of a different sort.

Airborne Mycotoxin Sampling and Screening Analysis

The indoor mycotoxins inhalation exposure of patients (n=25) was studied using a high-volume air sampler (60 cfm x 24 h) with a micropore-paper filter (8x11 inches). The filters were evaluated for cytotoxicity caused by mycotoxins using the MTT-cell culture bioassay and by culture identification.
