Federal courthouse to reopen soon two years after hurricanes battered structure

After a series of misfortunes spanning more than two years, the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach is scheduled to reopen for business Dec. 18."I think a lot of people are going to be real happy," said Clarence Maddox, court administrator and clerk of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida.

Milton voters approve spending for mold repair, wood heat

Milton voters Tuesday approved a $3.5 million bond to cover repairs and construction related to a mold infestation in the town elementary school. The vote was 445-190 in favor of the work. Bonds for wood burning heating units at the elementary and high schools also won easy approval from voters. Each unit would cost $1.4 million. Voters approved the wood heat, 431-203 for the elementary school and 431-204 for the high school, Town Clerk John Cushing said.

Lawmakers advance measure to check day care centers' air quality

TRENTON, N.J. -- Two months after a South Jersey day care center was found to be operating in a former mercury thermometer factory _ and a third of the preschoolers enrolled there were found to have elevated levels of mercury _ lawmakers on Monday advanced legislation that would monitor air quality inside such sites.

California: Theater must be cleaned up before renovation

Lead, mold, asbestos and contamination from bats living in the California Theater must be properly handled before renovation of the Pittsburg landmark can proceed, the City Council decided Monday.To do that, the council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, approved spending up to $1 million with the Restoration Clean Up Company Inc. of Pittsburg. The extent of the work that must be done -- and the total cost to do it -- cannot be determined until the company begins working, but redevelopment director Randy Starbuck said he expects the cost to approach $1 million.
