Tampa Bay Hosts AIHA Environmental Lab Conference

Tampa, FL -- The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) hosted its annual conference for the highly acclaimed Laboratory Quality Assurance Program (LQAP) at the Channelside Marriott in Tampa, FL.  This LQAP program has garnered international attention as it addresses identification of hazardous substances of the indoor environment.

Consumer protection was one of the primary outcomes of this meeting.  The LQAP achieves that goal by instituting and regulating a vigorous accreditation program for all laboratories involved in testing and analyzing samples. This program ensures professional, accurate results for IEQ practitioners.  There are many labs that basically operate out of a garage and for all intents and purposes, fleece the consumer.  Do-It-Yourself (DIY) screen test kit products and “mold experts” are becoming prevalent with their sample analysis conducted by non-accredited labs.  The LQAP is helping the consumer through marketing/branding of its logo as a symbol of quality lab analysis.  Also, they have formed a watchdog committee that will diligently monitor abuse of inaccurate claims by unscrupulous lab-like entities.

Secondary outcomes of the February Meeting highlighted the implementation of international standards (ISO) into LQAP participants’ standard operating procedures.  As leaders of an international scientific community, the American Industrial Hygiene Association is committed to the development, implementation, and regulation of the highest standards that promote a healthy and safe environment.

“The meeting was a unique opportunity to discuss a variety of issues, especially for industrial hygiene and environmental laboratory professionals.  With the guidance of industry leaders and technical experts, we were able to proficiently address the issues of generating quality data using common, standardized analytical protocols.” –Dr. Rajay Sahay, PhD, Director of Laboratory Services, Pure Air Control Services/EDLab. Dr. Sahay is a AIHA Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) member.
