Chapman students displaced from moldy dorms
Unreported water leaks led to growth, official says, forcing students to move into other rooms, hotel

ORANGE - Chapman University students who were displaced from moldy dormitories are expected to move back to their dorms in the coming weeks, officials said.

Previous students' failure to report water leaks led to the mold outbreak and the displacement of about a dozen students this semester, said Mary Platt, a university spokeswoman.

Some students - who were supposed to move into Morlan and Pralle-Sodaro halls and Davis Apartments - were placed elsewhere on campus. Others preferred to stay with friends or relatives near campus, and a handful were placed in a nearby hotel.

"It's not new on a university campus," Platt said. "Whenever you have a situation with so many people in a building, there are leaks people don't report."

Officials said two types of mold were discovered in a few rooms during inspections before the students arrived on campus. Stachybotrys, which can become hazardous if disturbed, and Aspergillus, which affects those who are sensitive to mold, were found.

Chapman hired a company to clean out the mold and expects the work to be done this month.
