Mold not the only problem in Charlotte library
by Kara Kenney, nbc-2.com

CHARLOTTE COUNTY: NBC2 brought you detailed information about mold in the Port Charlotte Public Library that was making people feel sick. Now, a new report is out detailing new problems at the library and what the county should do about it.

The new report has some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that the mold expert says the mold problem really isn't so bad for such an old library. The bad news is the library has a lot of other problems and a lot of things to fix.

The mold expert found stained ceiling tiles, decaying drywall, dirty air handlers and mildewed carpet in the building.
Inspectors also found dusty conditions throughout the library, including insect parts, dirt and debris in the library's air ducts.

Officials with the independent company say the only mold they found was on the roof decking inside a closet.
The report details what the county needs to do to fix the problems, including replacing the roof, tiles and some of the carpet along with cleaning the air handlers. Another recommendation is to inspect and clean all of the books that are donated to the library.

When the inspectors checked out the library at the end of August, the humidity was up to 65-percent in the building and the moist air is believed to be the root of the problems.

County officials say any actions they take will be based on the report. But despite repeated phone calls to Charlotte County leaders Tuesday, we didn't get any answers as far as what they plan to do about the problems at the library.
