Congress Angry About New Walter Reed Revelations
by Bruce Leshan, 9 News Now

Washington, DC (WUSA) -- Members of Congress are demanding answers from the military following a 9NEWS NOW EXCLUSIVE on major new problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, who serves on an oversight committee, watched our report on a mobile phone, and was dismayed to learn that wounded troops may have been shuffled from one bad building to another.

"This is a very alarming report," he said. "I think we need to get on top of situation. I intend to call Walter Reed immediately to see if they are following through on the information this individual has brought to light."

Virginia Congressman Jim Moran was just as upset.
"It's very disappointing. I guess I shouldn't be upset, because the Army's policy has been to allow Walter Reed to deteriorate, assuming it's eventually going to be closed."

Last week, a former inspector for the private contractor that's supposed to maintain Walter Reed brought us pictures of widespread problems.
Mark Cordell told us, "I won't sit back and let someone get killed."

Mark Cordell says a hot high voltage line runs through a flooded basement in a condemned building; that steam pipes have burst in the main administration center; hazardous waste is stored between occupied floors; and that water is rotting walls and floor joists.

But one of his biggest concerns is that injured soldiers were moved from the notorious Building 18 to another building that's also in bad shape.

Asked if the building the soldiers were moved to was just as bad as the now notorious Building 18, Cordell said, "Yes, everyone of the buildings at Walter Reed is the same way, or worse."

Rep. Van Hollen says, "These people who have been fighting a war, they shouldn't have to come back and fight a system."

The House is likely to pass a bill this week would keep Walter Reed open -- and pump millions of dollars into warrior care. Rep. Moran says that may the best way to fix the decrepit buildings. But the bill also includes a timeline to pull American troops out of Iraq -- it faces tough going in the Senate, and a promised Presidential veto.
