DURHAM, N.C. -- Officials at Duke University said two dormitories will be treated for mold next week.
Students were informed by e-mail this week that a common form of mold had been found in Mitchell and Decker towers in the Edens Quadrangle on Duke's West Campus. The two residence halls are home to 117 students.
The school said three mold species do not pose a serious health threat. Dean of Residence Life Eddie Hull said the molds are considered allergens and could cause allergic reactions in some people. But the black mold that's most commonly associated with dorm mold is not present
The mold was found in student rooms, common areas and a mechanical room. The mold was tested and found to be well within generally accepted standards of care.
Next week, all student rooms and common areas in the two buildings will be treated and disinfected. The school said students wont have to move while the work is completed.
