A case of mold has forced the closure of Ronald E. McNair High School cafeteria for at least two to four weeks.
The cost to eliminate the mold is unknown because the cost of materials and manpower has not yet been determined, said Art Hand, Lodi Unified School District's assistant superintendent of facilities and planning.
Because the repair is considered a "construction defect issue," the district expects any costs will absorbed by the contractor, Douglas E. Barnhardt, and its subcontractors.
Students took advantage of the breezy weather today and ate their lunches on picnic tables under a canopy or on concrete steps around the courtyard, as they did last year before they had a cafeteria. This year, they had their "Eagles' Nest" available for just a week before mold was discovered.
Mold was found growing between the building's concrete exterior wall and the interior panels, but nowhere would it have been a hazard to people, Hand said.
During last winter's heavy rains, leaks were discovered under the gymnasium floor, on two walls of the multipurpose room's dining/assembly hall, and in the principal's office. Repairs have already been made to the gym.
