Home developer faces another mold-related lawsuit

By JEFF SONIER / 6NEWS

Another lawsuit has been filed against a Charlotte developer, Ryland Homes, after a resident said mold in his former home made them sick and forced him to leave.

This is the second time the developer has been under fire for mold-related problems. Residents in the Hunter Oaks neighborhood - near the Mecklenburg County line in Union County - complained about mold in their homes.

The Hunter Oaks resident who is involved in the lawsuit told 6NEWS about the mold does not want his identity revealed because he fears it will cost him his new job.

He said the mold in his home ruined his life. He blames health problems for the loss of his previous job. Air testing found black mold spores in his home, and he said the mold made him too sick to work.

This photo shows lesions or ulcers on the man's body.

Throughout the ordeal, the man affected by the mold documented the problem with pictures, letters from his doctor, and home videos of his moldy crawlspace.

"The diagnosis was made, and they found I had high levels of black mold and other molds in my blood, and in my lymphatic system," said the man.

Doctors told the man's wife to live in a hotel until the home was cleaned, and the mold was removed.
Lesions or ulcers appeared everywhere on the man's body. He still shows signs of them.

"I'm at a point now, based on where my immune system is, I'm susceptible to just about everything," he said.
The man said he is looking for answers in the lawsuit against Ryland Homes. The developer is refusing all interviews.
The lawsuit claims that the homeowner was disabled from the effects of mold exposure. In response, Ryland Homes denies that mold contamination can disable anyone.

In response to the 6NEWS investigation Ryland wrote:

"Ryland took great care to ensure the comfort of our homeowners.

Although independent testing indicated that the moisture in the crawl space underneath the home did not pose a health risk, we removed it. In addition, in an effort to ensure our customers were satisfied, we bought back the home and paid for the family's temporary lodging as a courtesy.

We firmly believe that the case will show Ryland went above and beyond to do the right thing."
