Health Fears Over Bus Air-Conditioners

It is cold enough outside, so why turn on the air-conditioners in buses, a green group asked Wednesday. The Green Student Council claims that not only are bus companies wasting energy, they are also putting commuters at risk of catching flu. Members of the student group, comprising secondary school and university students, supported by Kwai Tsing District Council member Lam Siu-fai, protested outside the Kowloon Motor Bus depot in Lai Chi Kok. The company could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but according to its Web site, air-conditioning filters out dust and improves the air quality inside buses. "According to tests conducted overseas, after the air conditioning has been functioning for 20 minutes, the amount of dust in the air is reduced by 30 percent compared with normal ventilation," the KMB Web site said. But the Green Student Council's Chu Tze-wing said that these filters had been installed in only 600 of KMB's 4,300 buses. "Dust filtering is also different from virus filtering as the virus is much smaller than dust," Chu said, adding that fresh air is better than filtered air. Chu's claim is supported by the Indoor Air Quality Association, a US- based nonprofit organization, which says air quality at the roadside is better than that inside air-conditioned buses. At present more than 80 percent of KMB buses are air-conditioned.
