Answers to Previous IEQ Question

Which is the most effective type of treatment for allergies?

A.            Antihistamines

B.            Allergy shots

C.            Avoidance

D.            Anticholinergics

E.            Acetaminophen

The correct answer is (C) Avoidance.

The most effective form of treatment for any type of allergic condition is avoidance of the allergen (e.g., pollen, dust, peanuts). Only by completely avoiding an allergen can a person completely remove the threat of allergy symptoms. This dramatic step is often difficult, and requires the person to be diligent in order to limit allergen contact. Allergies to airborne substances often drive people indoors or require special indoor filters. With a food allergy, a person must completely remove the problem food and all types of the problem food from the diet. Although complete avoidance may not always be possible, an allergic person must always work towards limiting exposure to allergens.
