Allergy Sensitivity Has Doubled
by WMBD, News Channel 31

The National Institute of Health has determined allergy sensitivity has doubled in the past 30 years. Researchers say more than half of all Americans have some form of allergies. And the biggest allergen can be found right in your own home.

Out of a test group of 10,000 Americans, the highest response was to dust mites and the lowest to peanuts. Those at highest risk for an allergic response were people ages 20 to 29, males, minorities, people living in the West and people who live in old homes.

“Older homes, they are less taken care of as far as ventilation systems. Sometimes there’s just a lot of dust in the walls,” said allergist Dr. Ken Arnett. “Sometimes in older homes they have problems with mold in the basements.”

Also making the high-risk list were people who were not exposed to cigarette smoke. Doctors say this is strange since non-smokers usually have fewer respiratory problems.
