Health concerns about a massive mold problem at a Chesterfield fire station have forced firefighters to set up shop some two miles away from their traditional post.
So far, Chesterfield fire officials say the move has improved call response as fire crews are now positioned at the major Hull Street-Courthouse Road intersection, closer to where they often experience calls.
But for those who are now some two miles farther from full time firefighters, the move is seen as a potential increase in the amount of time it could take to bring firefighters to their house in an emergency.
Laminated signs are now posted outside Fire Station 10 on Adkins Road, where for years firefighters traditionally staffed at least one engine around the clock. The signs advise neighbors there are no longer full time firefighters on duty at the station.
The signs come after last spring problems with mold in the station kitchen and living quarters forced fire officials to move salaried full time firefighters some two miles away temporarily into the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad building on Courthouse Road.
The county has brought in contractors to look at the mold problem. But, so far officials say it would cost more than half the value of the property to take care of the mold problem.
In the meantime, volunteer firefighters are still staffing a fire engine and brush fire truck at Fire Station 10 on a part time basis.
This as county fire officials look at the future of full time fire service in this busy section of the county.
