HARTFORD -- New developments Wednesday morning in an ongoing battle to close a state building that workers say is a health hazard.
They say they've tried everything, now their union will bring their plea to the governor.
Workers at 25 Sigourney Street say it's enough to make anyone sick and they're sick of working in these conditions...
"By the end of the day I'm walking into walls," said Barbara Frankson. "My equilibrium is off. I'm stuffed up."
And this state worker isn't alone. Hundreds of her co-workers say the building is infested with mold. Just last month, eight workers were so sick doctors wouldn't let them return to work.
"Our goal is to shut this building down," said Union President Mike Winkler.
And that's why unions representing these workers will petition the governor today. The state Department of Public Works has rejected requests, saying there is no proof the building is making workers sick.
"If we have evidence the building is making people sick we will act on that," said Jim Fleming on DPW. "But it also has to be based on facts and evidence."
While workers say they don't need a report to know their health is a risk, evidence is something they will have to wait for. A report from federal scientists won't be in until the end of the year.
Now, the governor has said the health of state employees is a first priority. We'll see how she reacts to this petition today.
