There are over 100,000 species of fungi. Many fungi are good and useful (edible mushrooms would be an example of these) while some cause problems (some fungi can injure plants and humans). A moderately slow-growing fungus that produces a white, buff, brown or black colony with a buff or honey-colored reverse, within fourteen days, when incubated at 25oC (77oF). It has worldwide distribution and is very common. It has been isolated from soil, desert soils, plants, grasses, compost, insects, and bird feathers. Rarely an opportunistic human pathogen causing fungal infections of the skin and nails, and is associated with Type III (Immune Complex-Induced Disease) allergy.
