Hilton Testing "Enviro-rooms"
by The Washington Times

Chicago, IL -- Visitors to Chicago's Hilton O'Hare can book rooms redone as "enviro-rooms" to cut mold, dust and chemicals that might affect allergy and asthma sufferers.

More than 20 million U.S. residents suffer from asthma and as many as 70 million suffer from various allergies, according to the National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hilton officials plan to expand the pilot program to renovate 300 rooms, at an estimated cost of $7,000 to $15,000 per room, if the "enviro-rooms" are popular with guests during the next month.

Enhancing air quality in just two of the hotel's 858 rooms cost thousands of dollars, with each room getting air purifiers, air-quality monitors, new flooring, non-vinyl wall coverings, wood furniture, all-cotton bedding and wooden blinds.

"Asthma attacks and allergies are frequently triggered by exposure to dusts, molds or chemicals," said Nicholas Nardella, president of Environmental Technology Solutions Inc., which is doing the makeovers.
