Five Activities for Music Lovers in Southern California

Musical performances in Southern California are as eclectic as the region's residents

Southern California is a diverse geographic area, which is reflected in a wide variety of concerts and music festivals. Check out these five activities for music lovers in the Southland.

Spend the day at Doheny Days
Music festivals have a long history in the Southland and Doheny Days has carried on that tradition of providing entertainment to large, enthusiastic crowds. The Doheny Days Music Festival occurs in September at Doheny State Beach and features a lineup of big-name and up-and-coming artists. More information on tickets and performance schedules can be found at www.dohenydays.com/home.

Jazz at the supper club
Southern California features many music clubs, particularly since the entertainment industry is such a prominent part of the region. One such place is the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood, which mixes the ambiance of a classic supper club with quality jazz music. Information on the menu, artists, schedules and group events can be found at www.catalinajazzclub.com.

A trip to the symphony
Most large cities have a resident orchestra, and Los Angeles is no exception. The Los Angeles Philharmonic (the "Phil") puts on many performances throughout the year. From September through June you can see them at the architecturally-unique Walt Disney Concert Hall. During the summer, the Phil plays a series of events at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl. Information on concerts and tickets can be found at www.laphil.com.

Enjoying some musical theater
For some people, music is enhanced when it's paired with entertaining characters, a good story and energetic choreography. This explains the popularity of musical theater, and in Long Beach, a company called Musical Theatre West provides a full slate of well-known musicals throughout the year. Information on this popular theater company can be found at www.musical.org/MusicalTheatreWest/home.html.

A concert outdoors
Southern California has several outdoor amphitheaters that make for a distinctive concert atmosphere. One of these open venues is the historic Greek Theater, which was built in 1929 and has hosted many memorable concerts over the years. It's located in the famous Griffith Park in Los Angeles, and information on tickets and schedule can be found at their website: www.greektheatrela.com.

Music is not just about listening, it’s also about enjoying the atmosphere of live performances. Tastes in music vary from person to person, but there are always music activities and destinations that bring together a diverse collection of people.
