Using Hyperlinks to Organize Your Files
by Mona Zeftel
You can use Mathcad hyperlinks to create a table of content from one Mathcad worksheet to many other Mathcad worksheets or even other types of files. But did you know that you can also use Mathcad hyperlinks to link to regions in the same file? |
Creating a Hyperlink to Another File |
First type the text that you want to hyperlink. It's helpful to name the text as a useful title, so that others know where they are going, rather than writing "link here" or "see this."
Mouse over the text you want to link, so that it is highlighted, and choose Insert > Hyperlink. Choose the exact text and not a lot of surrounding words.
Type in the path in the top text box and a message in the bottom text box. The message will appear on the status bar at the bottom of the file. |
Keep the box checked for "Use relative path for hyperlinks" so even if you move both worksheets to a new drive and the hyperlink still works as long as you keep them in the same position. |
The hyperlinked text changes to bold and underlined. When your mouse passes over the text, a small hand appears indicating a hyperlink. |
Creating a Hyperlink to a Region in a Worksheet |
You can also hyperlink to a particular region in the same worksheet or in a different worksheet. |
First set up a tag in the region you want to link to: |
- Right-click in the region you want to hyperlink to.
- Choose Properties from the menu.
- Type in a short tag in the tag menu.
Then create a hyperlink as described above. At the end of the worksheet path, type "#" followed by the region tag. The complete path looks something like: C:\filename#region tag. If you are hyperlinking to a region in the same file, then you only need to type #region tag with a worksheet path.
Note: In Mathcad 11, you need to type in the whole filename, but in later versions of Mathcad you only need to type "#region tag." |
Creating a Table of Contents |
A table of contents file is just a Mathcad worksheet with a list of hyperlinks to other Mathcad worksheets. For longer worksheets, it's often helpful to create a table of contents or outline at the top of the sheet jumping to each section.
You can see and test an example of a hyperlinked table of contents at the top of this worksheet. |
When you start Mathcad, you can choose the Table of Contents template. Then add a hyperlink to each worksheet in your set. |
You can find out how to make an E-book with a Table of Content and a browse order, in the Author's Reference under the Help menu. |
Right-click to download Mathcad file (version Mathcad 11). You must have Mathcad installed on your computer before you can view this file.
