With apologies to our country’s founding father Thomas Paine, I suggest “These are the times that try alumni souls.” Never before have we seen anything like it, and we certainly hope that we will never again. But while a few alumni have abandoned our alma mater, the vast majority of alumni are standing strong—and that is what will see Penn State through to the other side of this crisis.

Message from Alumni Association President Smarilli
When I was elected vice president of the Penn State Alumni Association more than two years, I knew I had to begin preparing for the presidency. I had benefit of the example set by four outstanding presidents before me—Marianne Alexander, Lewis Gold, David Han, and Barry Simpson. Last year, I began shadowing Barry to many of the events over which he presided or spoke. This past July, I assumed the presidency with enthusiasm, ambition, and great humility. I thought I was well prepared for what lay ahead.

Alumni Town Hall Meetings with President Erickson
Alumni will have a chance to have their questions answered and share their concerns in person at three town hall-style meetings with Penn State President Rodney Erickson on Jan. 11, 12 and 13 in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City.

Moving Forward ...
Penn State alumni everywhere are most likely aware of the details of the Penn State crisis. While the negative news is difficult, there are some positives that have occurred as an outgrowth of this unprecedented crisis. The Penn State community—students, faculty, staff and alumni—has drawn together giving rise to events and efforts that are good, both on campus and across the country. Read more.
