Executive Director’s Insights
Fallen Penn Stater Honored in Normandy
Ed Wagner loved Penn State and Penn State loved Ed Wagner. During his time on campus from 1937 to 1941, Ed involved himself in almost everything campus life offered, from serving as president of the Interfraternity Council to managing the football team. Then World War II happened, and Ed’s life—like tens of thousands of other young American lives—was cut short in Normandy, France.
Readers Respond: Memories of Walnut Building
Last month, AlumnInsider included a story about the former Walnut Building and its commemoration with a Penn State historical marker. Two alumni reminisce about their time in Walnut Building.
History and Traditions
Growing a New Tradition: Penn State's Arboretum
At the northernmost edge of the Penn State University Park campus, one of the newest traditions is blooming into reality. Since construction began in earnest on The H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens in 2008, tens of thousands of plants, flowers, and trees have blossomed at The Arboretum at Penn State transforming the former test gardens and surrounding area off of Park Avenue into a tranquil oasis and place of learning. But the Arboretum’s growth is nowhere near complete.
Alumni Association News
Two Chapters Establish Trustee Matching Scholarships
Two Penn State Alumni Association affiliate groups made history recently by being the first chapters to establish Trustee Matching Scholarships. The Chester County (Pa.) Chapter followed by the Metro Washington, D.C. Chapter each raised the $50,000 minimum needed to establish this type of scholarship fund, which is matched dollar for dollar by the University. Penn State undergraduate students from each area will be the recipients.
