Katrena Carr At Penn State, Katrena Carr–Perou played point guard and shooting guard for the Lady Lion basketball team, including the team’s only appearance in the Final Four in 2000. A decade later, she and her husband are redirecting their lives to help the people of Haiti. MORE>>   Travelin’ with Tina More than 50 Penn Staters just returned from a tour that included everything from dining at the Eiffel Tower to attending the famed Passion Play in Oberammergau. Traveling with them was Penn Stater magazine editor Tina Hay ’83, who blogged and photographed their progress across France and Germany. MORE>>   History and Traditions First 69 Students Arrive in ’59 August means back to campus at Penn State, but that wasn’t always the case. Penn State’s first students—all 69 of them—arrived not in August but in early February of 1859. Today, as the University gears up for the arrival of more than 87,000 students at its 24 campuses, AlumnInsider looks back to when there was just one campus and one building, at The Farmers’ High School. MORE>>     Executive Director’s Insights NEBRASKA! The news caught me by surprise. I had suspected Rutgers all along as the 12th member of the Big Ten. After all, Rutgers would offer an Eastern counter-weight to the Big Ten, and help capture the New York and Philadelphia media markets for the Big Ten Network. And it would be convenient to Penn State, as 100,000 of our alumni live in those two metro areas. MORE>>     Alumni Association News Scaling New Heights Penn State pride runs rampant throughout the Nittany Nation—and those who bleed blue and white join the Penn State Alumni Association in record numbers. Penn State’s loyal alumni and friends have once again made their Penn State Alumni Association number one in membership, reaching a record high of 164,658 on June 30. MORE>>   Annual Trustees Update Draws Raves It took just 20 minutes, 2,200 words and 94 slides to paint a powerful picture of the Penn State Alumni Association’s success during the 2009–10 academic year. From chartering new alumni groups to raising membership levels to new heights, the annual report delivered by President Barry M. Simpson ’69 to the Penn State Board of Trustees received rave reviews from the Trustees and President Graham Spanier.
