Technically, Thon 2009—like all Thons before—does not have a specific fundraising goal. But the unwritten, unspoken wish of everyone involved is to exceed last year’s grand total of more than $6.6 million. To raise that kind of money, Penn State students are “thinking outside the can.”

City Lights Shine on Metro Alums
City Lights 2009 kicks off its 5th season of exciting programs starting Feb. 12 at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia with a presentation by one of the foremost experts on the Underground Railroad, Charles L. Blockson ’56. Also in the line up are events at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg, Pa.; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the United Nations in New York City; Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh; and the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Alum Brings Afghanistan, Africa to Brandywine
Since 1990, Aldo Magazzeni ’72 has dedicated much of his life to bringing clean water, shelter, and hope to those in need around the world through his charitable organization, Traveling Mercies. Photographs of his journey helping poor and neglected people in Afghanistan and Africa are currently on display until March 6 in the Penn State Brandywine John D. Vairo Library.

Exhibit and Lectures Mark Black History Month
Penn State’s first black female student Mildred Bunton ’32, Space Shuttle astronaut Guion Bluford ’64, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Franco Harris ’72 are just three of the 54 black alumni who have received Penn State’s top awards. A new exhibit, “Penn State’s Award-Winning Black Alumni” is one of a number of ways Penn State is marking Black History Month.
