We Want to Hear From You
In the Hintz Family Alumni Center last week, seven doctoral students from New Orleans who are studying here at Penn State told their stories of Hurricane Katrina at a press conference. How the hurricane trapped their families. How they didnít know for a day or two if their family members were safe. How they were panicked about their familiesí whereabouts. One student didnít know for a couple of days whether her five-year-old daughter and her firefighter husband were still alive. Thankfully, all of these studentsí family members are now safe and sound—and several have already settled in State College.
Twenty-three Alumni to Receive Alumni Fellow Award
The Penn State Alumni Association will honor 23 alumni for their outstanding professional accomplishment with the most prestigious award given by the Alumni Association, the Alumni Fellow award. The alumni will gather at University Park on Oct. 19 to receive their awards and inspire students.

DuBois Launches New Blue & White Society
Penn State DuBois recently began the newest Blue & White Society, the student membership contingent of the Penn State Alumni Association. With 4,700 members across the commonwealth, membership in the Blue & White Society has almost doubled in the last two years. While there are Blue & White Society members on all of Penn State's campuses, just four have active Blue & White Society groups—University Park, Shenango, Schuylkill, and now DuBois.

Members Receive Report in Mail
The members of the Penn State Alumni Association got a bonus along with their September/October issue of The Penn Stater—the "2005 Report to Members," which outlined the Alumni Association's work and achievements during the last two years.

Tackling Board Development, Strategic Plans
The Volunteer Services Team often receives questions this time of year such as "how do I get new people on my board?" and "are we doing the right thing?" After filling out the annual report, many groups reflect upon their successes and begin developing programs and events designed to make the organization even stronger in the coming year.

Annual Reports Are Now Due
Just a reminder that affiliate group annual reports were due to the Alumni Association on Sept. 10, 2005. So if you don't have yours in yet, please download the Annual Report Form from www.alumni.psu.edu/groups/volunteer/. Annual reports gives the Alumni Association an overall snapshot of your organization's activities during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005). If you have questions, please contact Dana Allen, associate director of Volunteer Services, at dga10@psu.edu.

Earth and Mineral Sciences Alumni Tour Alaska
The beauty of Alaska during the summer solstice was even more special for a group of 70 Penn State alumni when they toured the hidden fjords and glaciers of Alaska's Inside Passage in June as part of Penn State Travel and Education's first college-specific alumni tour.

Pittsburgh Chapter Cleans Up School
Allegheny County Chapter members turned out on a muggy Saturday morning in May to clean up Friendship Elementary School and an adjoining park, one critical need community service project identified by Pittsburgh Cares for its "Hands On Pittsburgh" day of caring.

Penn State MBNA Credit Card Begins Reward Program
Just about every credit card offers a points program. Use the card, accrue the points, and turn in the points for anything from manicure sets to crystal candlesticks to round-trip airline tickets. But now the MBNA credit card offered to Penn State alumni gives cardholders rewards that are uniquely Penn State.

Paterno's First Win in 1966 Was Inauspicious Start
The actual Beaver Stadium crowd of 37,270 on Sept. 16, 1966 was about 9,000 less than capacity, and none of the spectators realized the first victory of Joe Paterno's head coaching career would be so historic. That's how Lou Prato '59, director of the Penn State All-Sports Museum, described Paterno's first game in a story, synopsized here, for "Paterno 324," a commemorative magazine published by The Barash Group and Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics.
