We’re only days away from the 150th anniversary of Penn State’s chartering, and so I thought I’d share with you the story from Penn State’s past that I find most intriguing yet disconcerting. It is the story of our founding president, Evan Pugh: How quickly and pervasively his influence was felt. Then, even more quickly, it was lost, as if Pugh had never lived. Pugh’s story is Penn State’s Greek tragedy.

Breakfast with Santa and the McKeesport Alumni Society
On Dec. 11, the Penn State McKeesport Society hosted its annual Breakfast with Santa at the McKeesport campus—providing a memorable experience for more than 75 local children. Volunteers from the Allegheny County Chapter and students from Penn State McKeesport joined the society in organizing the event.

Greater Susquehanna Valley Chapter hosts another successful pig roast
On Aug. 22, more than 300 guests attended the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chapter’s 24th annual pig roast. This event featured the entire Penn State cheerleading squad along with the Nittany Lion mascot, and raised more than $3,000 for scholarships.

Arts and Architecture Alumni Society hosts theatre reunion
On Jan. 29, 150 alumni and friends gathered in New York City’s famed theatre district for an annual reunion hosted by the Arts and Architecture Alumni Society. Joined by current students, as well as current and former faculty, the reunion celebrated the long, celebrated history of theatre at Penn State.

In just over a week, thousands of Penn State students will fill Rec Hall on the University Park campus for the annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon—more affectionately known as Thon. To help celebrate this great event, and to support the students who will be going for 48 straight hours, the Alumni Association will once again hold the popular Thon Alumni and Parents Weekend.

The founding of a world-class university
It began in 1855; just 80 years after the United States became an independent nation. On February 22 of that year, Pennsylvania Governor William Pollock signed a bill chartering The Farmers’ High School as a baccalaureate institution, creating what is today The Pennsylvania State University.
