February 2005 promises to be an incredibly fascinating month at Penn State. It’s Black History Month, Thon begins its thunderous weekend on the 18th, and by month’s end, Rene Portland ’04h and her Lady Lions will have sewn up another Big Ten Conference championship. But overarching all of this is our true Sesquicentennial, our 150th birthday. The crowning event of this celebration—a national academic symposium on “The Future of the American Public Research University”—is set for Feb. 25 and 26. And you’re invited.

Penn State responds to tsunami tragedy
A truly international academic community, Penn State was not spared from the tragedy of last month’s tsunami that devastated thousands of miles of coastline along the Indian Ocean. More than 700 students and 95 faculty and staff hail from the countries most affected by the tsunami. Nearly 700 alumni also are known to reside in the region.

Dickinson School of Law board approves two-campus plan
The Board of Governors of Penn State's Dickinson School of Law on Saturday approved a memorandum of understanding that provides for Penn State to move forward with extensive renovation and expansion of the law school's Carlisle campus and expansion of the law degree program to the University Park campus.

On Nov. 24, members of the Colorado Chapter joined forces with other community members for the annual Denver Basket Brigade—a charitable event that provides Thanksgiving dinner to area families in need.

In mid-November, members of Penn State’s oldest academically affiliated alumni group—the Hotel and Restaurant Society—gathered in New York City for an alumni awards banquet held in conjunction with the hospitality industry’s largest event of the year.

The Thespians AIG welcomed alumni back to University Park in November for a social gathering prior to the Thespians’ performance of Cabaret. The group has a similar event planned for this spring.

The magic of musical theatre: A collection of images
Earlier this month, alumni in four select cities were treated to an evening of musical theatre, courtesy of the Penn State Alumni Association. The event showcased the immense talents of Penn State students currently enrolled in the University’s renowned Musical Theatre program.

New Penn State Alumni Association license plate funds student programs
In 1986, the Penn State Alumni Association became the first organization in the country to offer an affinity license plate displaying a university’s name. Since that time, Penn Staters in nine states have demonstrated their pride by displaying a Penn State Alumni Association license plate. Available only to members of the Penn State Alumni Association, the new Pennsylvania plate helps to support worthy student programs.

Jan. 21, 1851: The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was formed
Formed on Jan. 21, 1851, the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was an organization dedicated to scientific agriculture. The organization advanced the idea of a school in which scientific methods of agriculture could be studied. That idea became a reality with the creation of the Farmers’ High School—better known today as The Pennsylvania State University.
