[ A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ]
With less than two weeks left in 2004, it is time to turn inward, to family and friends. It is time to revel in what is most important on this mortal coil—our relationships with those we love and cherish. I think of our Alumni Association as one extended family—our Executive Board, Alumni Council, volunteer leaders, staff, and students. This year, thanks to all of you, I have learned what “We Are…Penn State” truly means—pride and unity in our noble cause, born of love for alma mater and faith in its grand destiny.

Penn State is largest contributor to Pa. economy; statewide impact totals $6.14 billion
A new economic impact study released Nov. 30 positions Penn State as the single largest contributor to Pennsylvania’s economy—an engine of 24 campuses generating $6.14 billion annually in direct net economic impact to the Commonwealth. “In terms of generating the greatest return for each dollar spent, it is quite clear that there is no more fruitful investment for the Commonwealth than Penn State,” said Penn State President Graham Spanier.

Penn Staters build a legacy of service
Service to the community is an important part of the Penn State Way. Two of our Group Spotlight articles focus on it and our feature article mentions it, as well. Each year, Penn Staters—either as members of a group or as individuals—volunteer countless hours to meaningful service projects. As an Alumni Association, we’re proud of the work you do, and we want to recognize you for your efforts.

Aiken-Augusta Chapter lends a hand to local citizens
The Aiken-Augusta Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association feels a duty to give back to its community. With that in mind, chapter members recently took time out of their busy schedules to help an elderly couple in the community make much needed improvements to their home as part of the United Way’s 10th annual “Project Vision.”

IST Alumni Society starts a new tradition
More than 200 students, alumni, faculty, and staff gathered for a mid-October tailgate to celebrate the formation of the School of Information Sciences and Technology Alumni Society. The fall tailgate, which was held prior to the Iowa football game, is expected to become an annual tradition.

Syracuse Chapter mixes work and play at highway cleanup tailgate
Since 1992, Penn State alumni in upstate New York have been doing their part to clean up the local community by adopting a section of Interstate 81. As part of this effort, the Syracuse Chapter has incorporated a tailgate into the event—a tailgate that once drew the attention of the sheriff’s patrol (don’t worry, everything was legal).

Centre County Chapter attends “Mamma Mia”
More than 100 members of the Centre Country Chapter attended the musical “Mamma Mia” together on Oct. 13, at Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus. A second group of members—directly behind the chapter contingent—attended as members of C.A.L.L., a senior peer-taught Community Academy of Lifelong Learning. Combined, 151 members of the chapter attended the event and shared in a night of Penn State fellowship.

December 1921: Nita-Nee Campus Club for women formed
The “brothel law” is a popular myth used to explain the history of sorority housing on campus. While the housing guidelines used for women in the early 1920s were put in place mainly because of issues regarding space, a moral code for female students attending the University was also enforced. With the formation of Nita-Nee Campus Club for Women in December 1921, this moral code was challenged and a small victory was won for female students.
