The Penn State Alumni Association is in the throes of creating a new three-year strategic plan that will take effect on July 1, 2005. Since last March, the Executive Board of Alumni Council has been sorting out the strategic priorities that will enable the Alumni Association to thrive in the years ahead. We’ve reached consensus on nine major priorities. At this point, it’s time to lay them out for you and invite your comments.

The awards are part of the Alumni Association’s comprehensive recognition program, which acknowledges individuals and groups for outstanding service to the University and the Association. Volunteer awards provide groups and individuals with deserved recognition
Thirty different individuals and groups received much deserved recognition from the Penn State Alumni Association this month through the presentation of the 2004 Volunteer Awards. Under the guidance of the Awards Committee of Alumni Council, the affiliate group awards were modified this year to make all affiliate groups eligible for any group award, and new categories were added.

Annapolis Chapter beats the heat and raises money for its scholarship fund
The heat of mid-July couldn’t deter the Annapolis (Md.) Chapter from its scholarship fundraising efforts. The group raised more than $300 through a Creamery ice cream sale at a local Independence Day festival. The group not only raises money for the scholarship fund, but also is a leader in community service.

Professional Women’s Network of L.A. is back from hiatus
On Sept. 23, the newly reformed Professional Women’s Network of Los Angeles held its first event of the 2004–05 year. A relaxed social gathering at West Hollywood’s La Di Da restaurant and art gallery provided guests with the opportunity to network while enjoying appetizers and drinks.

Potomac Valley Chapter celebrates at “Fall-for-All Festival”
Each year, the Potomac Valley Chapter collects items for Toys for Tots—a national program that collects and distributes holiday gifts to needy children in local communities. This year, the chapter gave something back to those members who have donated toys by paying their admission to the “Fall-for-All Festival” in Frederick, Md.

Wisconsin Chapter is reorganized and revitalized
The Wisconsin Chapter recently reorganized and has made dramatic progress in a relatively short period of time. The “Penn State Cheesehead”—a collaborative idea of the chapter’s board members—made its debut at the Alumni Association’s pep rally prior to the Wisconsin football game.

November 12, 1887: Penn State’s first intercollegiate football contest
In 1881, thirteen Penn State students traveled to Bucknell University for an informal game of football. The game was played by rules that were more similar to rugby than modern day football. The Penn State team won that game, 9-0. Six years later, on Nov. 12, 1887, the team set out once again for Lewisburg, where it won, 54-0. This game—which was played under more modern rules—has come to be regarded as Penn State’s first intercollegiate football contest.
