[ A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ]
|
Dear Alumni Volunteers:
After 149 years, it’s finally here—the University’s sesquicentennial year. And your Penn State Alumni Association is heavily involved in making sure the University’s 150th birthday is celebrated early and often over the next academic year. We’ll begin the yearlong celebration in early July with an event featuring the granddaughters of former Penn State President George Atherton and legendary professor of botany William Buckhout. There will be a public kick-off event in Schwab Auditorium on July 8, displays in the HUB throughout the year, a University-wide student event in October, and a national academic conference in late-February. Penn State has emerged as one of the world’s most consequential research universities. It has provided access and opportunity on an unprecedented scale. It’s high time we celebrate!

Philadelphia Chapter hosts event to benefit Adam Taliaferro Foundation
On September 23, 2000, Penn State cornerback Adam Taliaferro suffered a spinal cord injury late in the fourth quarter of the Nittany Lions’ loss at Ohio State. He was told he’d never walk again. Less than a year later, Taliaferro walked, and then ran, out of Beaver Stadium’s south tunnel prior to the Lions’ 2001 season opener. Last month, the Philadelphia (Pa.) Chapter hosted a fund raising event for the Adam Taliaferro Foundation—an organization that provides educational resources for people who work in the fields of athletics and medicine as well as grant funding for athletes who suffer incapacitating injuries.

Photo Essay: Keeping the Penn State family connected
Your Alumni Association is the world’s biggest and best. We’ve been able to maintain that standing because of the variety and value of the services and benefits we offer to members. Perhaps the greatest benefit we provide, however, is the intangible benefit of a continued connection to Penn State and fellow Penn Staters. This month, more than 700 Penn State alumni from the classes of 1964, 1959, 1954, and before, returned to University Park for Traditional Reunion Weekend to “relive, reconnect, and remember.” The Association offers a number of other events throughout the year that give alumni and friends a chance to reconnect. We also maintain an online directory—for members only—and will be publishing a printed alumni directory this fall in celebration of the University’s sesquicentennial year—all in an effort to keep you connected to Dear Old State.
