College of Engineering Alumni Society

Article related photo. From Facebook to the fantastic machines of the annual Rube Goldberg contest, the College of Engineering keeps alumni involved with what’s new in the College. At the heart of those efforts is the Penn State Engineering Society, one of the oldest alumni societies on campus.

Chartered in 1959, the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS), together with home economics, is the oldest alumni society at Penn State. The society works closely with deans, faculty, staff and students to promote and improve the engineering programs at Penn State. A board of directors, including officers and the chairs of the department Alumni Affiliate Program Groups (APGs), governs the society.

Membership and Networking
All graduates of the College of Engineering who are members of the Penn State Alumni Association are automatically members of the College of Engineering Alumni Society. No additional dues are required. Penn State engineering alumni can network with more than 1,700 engineering alumni by becoming a fan of the college on Facebook: www.facebook.com/PSUEngineering

  • Alumni Mentoring Program: Alumni are invited to participate in the Penn State Engineering Alumni Mentoring Program currently in place in five engineering departments. Students are paired with alumni from business, industry and academia for career guidance and professional development activities.
  • Career Guidance for Students: PSEAS sponsors Resumania, the fall résumé review day held in conjunction with Penn State’s Fall Career Days. Engineering alumni volunteer to review and critique students’ résumés.
  • Rube Goldberg Machine Contest: The College of Engineering Alumni Society sponsors the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, which challenges students to design and build a complicated machine to complete a simple task. This year’s task will be to dispense an appropriate amount of hand sanitizer into a hand in 20 steps or more. PSEAS also pays for the winning team to travel to Purdue University to compete in the national competition. For more information about the 2010 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, visit http://www.engr.psu.edu/RubeGoldberg/.
  • Engineering Co-op and Internship Student of Year: Every fall, Engineering Co-Op and Internship Students of the Year are selected.

Affiliate Program Groups
The College of Engineering has six affiliate program groups (APGs). Alumni are encouraged to volunteer with an APG to promote the activities and goals of their own academic department.

Scholarships
The Alumni Society has established the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship to support outstanding undergraduate students in the college.

The college’s alumni magazine, Engineering Penn State, is published bi-annually. The Dean’s Report on Philanthropy is an annual publication that highlights the impact philanthropic support has had in the college each year. Alumni are encouraged to send in their news via Class Notes on the Engineering Alumni and Friends Website. For the latest news, follow the College of Engineering on Twitter (“@PSUEngineering”) or subscribe to the free Engineering Newswire. The College of Engineering highlights one alumnus/a every month on its Website. Please send suggestions for alumni profiles to Jennifer Theiss at jtheiss@engr.psu.edu
