Basketball Bouncing into Action

Article related photo.Penn State men’s basketball returns after last year’s Cinderella season culminating in Penn State’s first ever NIT Championship. Armed with some blue chip recruits and a contract good through the 2013–14 season, 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year Ed DeChellis hopes to propel the program to even greater heights.

The Nittany Lions hit the hardwoods at Bryce Jordan Center on Friday, Nov. 6, against Slippery Rock. Fans in town for the Penn State–Ohio State football game on Nov. 7 can add some basketball to their sports weekend. Other early season games include contests with Virginia, cross-state rival Temple, and Virginia Tech. The men’s team will also compete in the Charleston Classic—along with Davidson, La Salle, Miami, South Carolina, Tulane, UNC-Wilmington and South Florida—in Charleston, S.C., Nov. 19-22.

Big Ten play tips off on Tuesday, Dec. 29, when the Nittany Lions travel to Minnesota. Conference play at home starts with Wisconsin (Jan. 3) and Michigan (Jan. 7). Most of the men’s games are televised. Look for them on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Big Ten Network and CBS. Schedule>>

Fans can also size up this year’s Lady Lion basketball team the day after the Penn State–Ohio State football game when they play an exhibition game versus Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tip off is at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 in the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Lady Lions’ regular season gets underway—at Drexel in Philadelphia—Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m. Coquese Washington heads into her third season as Lady Lion coach hoping to improve on last season’s disappointing 11-18 record. Lady Lion Big Ten play begins Sunday, Dec. 6, at Minnesota. The first Big Ten home game is against Iowa on Mon., Dec. 28, at 7:00 p.m.

Other season highlights for the Lady Lions include taking on Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge (Dec. 2) at home and a home match up with Pitt (Dec. 12). The WBCA Pink Zone, honoring breast cancer survivors, is scheduled for the Jan. 24 contest with Illinois at the BJC.

Most of the Lady Lions’ games will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Schedule>>
