Paterno Retrospective at Pattee Library
It’s all there: from the black horn-rim glasses of the early years to the Nike jacket of today. There’s the Wheaties box and the Sports Illustrated covers, the pictures with President Gerald Ford, Bear Bryant, and Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti. There’s even a photograph of the infamous “whale pants” he first sported in 1982. Those images and more are part of A Paterno Retrospective, highlighting a half-century of Coach Joe Paterno’s contributions to Penn State. The retrospective is on display in the main exhibit hall of Pattee Library through Dec. 28.
While a university library might seem an odd place for an exhibit commemorating its football coach, Paterno’s longstanding support of Penn State’s libraries makes it the obvious choice. More than half of the $4 million he and his family have donated to Penn State has supported the libraries.
To celebrate Paterno’s wide-ranging contributions to Penn State, the University Libraries have created a seven-series commemorative bookmark. Single bookmarks are available starting the Monday before each 2007 home football game at all library locations. A full, uncut sheet of the Paterno Retrospective Collector’s Bookmark Series 2007 will be given as an acknowledgement of gifts of support to the University Libraries.
The Paterno exhibit is open to the public during Pattee Library’s regular operating hours. Call 814-865-3063 for a listing of general hours. To make a gift to the University Libraries, call 814-865-2258 or visit online at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/development/special.
