On April 17, 2004, members of the Baltimore (Md.) Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association rolled up their sleeves and grabbed their cleaning supplies for a day of community service at the Susquehanna Museum of Havre de Grace. The clean-up effort was in preparation for the museum’s annual spring opening on the first Sunday in May.
The Penn State Alumni Association’s National Service Program is now in its tenth year and participation in community service activities has both steadily increased and become more varied all over the country. This is the ninth year that the Baltimore Chapter has worked at the Susquehanna Museum as part of its participation in the national service project. Dale Woomert ’49 and his wife, Sally, hosted the group of 13 and were delighted by their hard work.
“The historic house was indeed given a loving cleaning,” they reported. The group washed windows, draperies, floors, and artifacts. Two truckloads of vegetation and shrubs were taken away from the exterior of the building.
Afterwards, the group gathered at a local restaurant to enjoy a bit of social time together.
Some of the chapter members are also tour guides at the museum and are always eager to tell visitors that the Penn State Alumni Association helps prepare the museum for its spring opening.
