L.A. Chapter, Communications Society sponsor successful networking event

Feature speakers from left to right for the event included Chapter President Ridge Riley, panelist Tom Mankiewicz, Communications Dean Douglas Anderson, Emcee Gary Kaplan, panelist Carl Diorio, and panelist Mike Marcus, who spoke to an audience of 170.

The Los Angeles Chapter and the College of Communications Alumni Society teamed up on Feb. 28 to provide a casual evening of fun and networking for alumni in the Los Angeles area. The event continues to grow in popularity, with this year’s program attracting more than 150 attendees.

Gary Kaplan ’61 Lib, who served as master of ceremonies, discussed employment trends and the reality of the current job market, while also offering advice to current job seekers. Kaplan is the president of Gary Kaplan and Associates Executive Search Consultants. Douglas Anderson, dean of Penn State’s College of Communications, was also on hand to give a brief report on the state of the college as well as an update on new initiatives.

The event also featured a forum program with three panelists: Tom Mankiewicz, Carl DiOrio ’74 Com, and Mike Marcus ’67 Bus. Mankiewicz has had a multi-faceted and successful career as a screenwriter; DiOrio is currently the business editor and box office analyst at Variety; and Marcus has more than thirty years experience in the entertainment industry, including serving as president and chief operating officer of MGM Pictures. Their expertise provided alumni with vital insight into current trends of the entertainment industry.

Participants enjoyed dinner and a lively panel discussion focusing on advice for advancing a career in the entertainment industry.
Ridge Riley ’70 Edu, president of the L.A. Chapter, and Bill Jaffe ’60 Com, president of the Communications Society, were in attendance to share the Penn State spirit and help alumni connect with each other.
