Changes in store for National Service Week program
In 1994 the Penn State Alumni Association launched National Service Week, an annual event designed to promote community service among Penn Staters nationwide. In the past 10 years, we’ve proclaimed that "Penn State is #1 in Service, Too" and asked others if they, too "got pride" in their alma mater.
During this time, our affiliate groups have embraced the spirit of volunteerism and made community service a priority in many chapters, alumni interest groups, and societies. This enthusiasm and desire to give back to the community year round without the confines of a specific week has led the Alumni Association to reevaluate National Service Week. Rather than performing a project within a specific time frame, we encourage your group to engage in service whenever an opportunity arises that fits with the interest of your members. If your group does not currently have a community service program, our office can provide you with materials to help you get started.
We realize that many groups successfully participate in established service projects during the traditional National Service Week time frame in mid-spring. We encourage you to continue to do this and let us know about your successes. Group presidents will be sent a letter in the near future with more information regarding changes to the National Service Week program. Please contact your regional director with any questions.
